Introduction to BSL

Course duration:    5 weeks
Class duration:     2 hours per week

The Introduction to BSL course certificate is a great way to learn some BSL if you wish to communicate with Deaf people e.g. at home or at work, or simply to learn a new skill/hobby.  In addition, it offers a solid foundation before committing to further qualifications, such as BSL Level 1.  It is designed to enable you to acquire a basic ability to communicate BSL in everyday situations. The content will resemble essential, real-life vocabulary, and vital language functions necessary for common situations and experiences where learners may encounter Deaf people.

Learning Outcomes & Aims


Upon successful completion of this course, Learners will receive a certificate of completion. In addition, Learners will be able to:


  • Identify some of the basic grammatical constructions of BSL.
  • be able to use basic BSL receptive skills.
  • demonstrate their ability to sign straightforward information in descriptive or narrative BSL.
  • be able to hold a conversation in BSL.
  • be aware of current issues pertaining to the Deaf community
